Order to conduct survey of Rancho del Paso lands, 1857 Jan. 26.

Four-page document dated Jan 26th 1857 and signed by John C. Hays, U.S. Surveyor General, directed to DeWitt C. Cage, appointing him as deputy surveyor for execution of the official survey of the tract of land known as "Rancho del Paso". Accompanied by two documents attesting to the accuracy of the completed survey, signed and sworn by chainmen Andrew Cronly and Theophilus A. Giangue and by Deputy Surveyor DeWitt Cage, dated Jan. 31st and Feb. 8th, 1857, and one envelope from the U.S. Land Commission addressed to D.C. Cage, U.S. Deputy Surveyor. After California became a state in 1850, it was necessary for landholders to establish title to their land by obtaining validation from the United States Land Commission. Once the Commission had ruled in favor of the claimant an official survey of the land was required as the final step before the land patent was issued. This document establishes the terms for conducting such a survey of the tract of land in Sacramento County known as the "Rancho del Paso". After the successful completion of the survey the patent was issued by Surveyor General Hays on May 4, 1858 and signed by President James Buchanan.
